Sr. Structural Engineer

Position Summary

Stratolaunch is a technology accelerator that engineers operationally realistic testing at Mach 5+. Our air-launched, Talon testbeds are reusable, cost-effective platforms that enable routine access to the hypersonic environment. We deliver flight data critical to validating system performance and achieving rapid technology deployment. Together with our customers, we drive innovations that are imperative to advancing national security.

 

To help achieve these efforts, Stratolaunch is seeking a Sr Structural Engineer to support design, analysis, integration, testing, and maintenance of a metallic hypersonic aircraft structure.  This position will own the design of primary and secondary structure, including conceptualizing components, sizing and analyzing components, generating CAD model parts and assemblies, creating margin reports, detailed design, and supporting the manufacturing effort. You are responsible for contributing to the vehicle’s structural technical performance, including meeting design and mission requirements, resolving technical challenges, and implementing technology upgrades that improve the competitive basis of the hypersonic vehicle architecture. 

 

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Participate in and drive portions of the structural development of hypersonic vehicles
  • Size primary structure components to meet program structural requirements
  • Work with structural analysts to mature structural design
  • Select material systems and construction techniques that meet project objectives
  • 3D CAD model parts and assemblies
  • Perform detailed design of structural components, leading to release of engineering work orders
  • Design various secondary/support structure, as necessary
  • Work with engineering technicians, shop, and/or vendors to fabricate and assemble your designs
  • Resolve technical challenges as they arise for hypersonic vehicle
  • Regular and comprehensive communication to project leads
  • Contribute to the integration of complex aerospace systems
  • Travel, as needed, to support the company
  • Demonstrate honesty, responsibility, integrity, and fulfillment of commitments

 

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

Required Qualifications:

  • Ability to analyze your designs using hand calculations and FEM
  • Experience with 3D CAD modeling of parts and assemblies
  • Experience with metallic part design and manufacturing methods
  • Experience with aerospace fasteners and specs
  • Experience with drafting and GD&T
  • Ability to communicate technical challenges and guidance to varied audiences to explain rationale and/or resolve concerns
  • Ability to take direction, work relatively independently, and prioritize tasking to fit within the business goals
  • Ability to quickly adapt to changing priorities
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience designing high temperature metallic structures
  • Experience with ground test hardware, including releasing engineering definition and developing work instructions
  • Experience with static structural testing
  • Experience with loads development
  • Active TS/SCI security clearance

 

Required Computer Skills:

  • Siemens NX & Teamcenter
  • MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)

 

Preferred Computer Skills:

  • Programming – Matlab or Python
  • Familiarity with configuration management systems – Jira (preferred)

 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) from accredited institution and 5-10 years of engineering experience, OR equivalent combination of education and experience

 

Special remarks regarding work environment, if applicable

  • Position based in Mojave, CA, though position allows for partial remote/on-site work (hybrid).
  • Travel estimated to be <5%

Mojave Air & Spaceport is located 95 miles north of Los Angeles. To outsiders it may seem like it is the middle-of-nowhere, but it offers both affordability and central access to a variety of California’s best attractions and landmarks. Hikers will find themselves within a 2-3 hours distance of some of the best state and national parks, including Yosemite and Sequoia in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Beer fanatics will find some of the best West Coast IPAs at Bravery and Lucky Luke’s in Lancaster.
